So, if you are continually repeating things that might hurt your hair, at some point your hair will be damaged and brittle, for sure. Therefore, there are two types of hair damage. Chemical and mechanical damage.

Chemical hair damage

Overusing hair colors, bleach, chemical straightening or perming, or any other chemical substance can lead to chemical hair damage. You get the point. The thing is, you have to be careful with chemical processes, and never repeat some of those in less than three months.

If you are a fan of highlights, balayage, or any other beautiful technique of coloring, you have to use hair masks on a regular base.

If not, you will know how the breakage, lifeless hair, and weak hair shaft look like. Believe me, it’s horrible.

However, the more you color, straight or perm your hair, the more products you will need to fix the damage. For instance, if you bleach your roots every three weeks or you do a couple of highlights every six months, there is a massive difference in the level of damage. So, more frequently chemicals equal to more hair care products.

Every chemical product attacks your cuticle directly. Your hair uses keratin as a layer to protect the cuticle from breakage. Once, when there is not enough keratin to protect it, your cuticle starts breaking.

What does it look like? Well, not nice, for sure. Your hair becomes weak, it breaks, and it looks so dry and damaged. This is the worst level of damage. When it starts breaking and falling out. Horrible.

Remember, there is a limit. From one point you certainly cannot fix your damaged hair. Therefore, you have to do a haircut at first.

After that, you need a haircare range, that will help your hair. In the end, is time. Time for recovery. From six months until three years in the worst stadium. To be clear, three years is to grow new hair, when your hair is totally burned out.

To prevent this, just be careful with dye and chemical treatments. It’s that easy.

Mechanical hair damage

Mechanical hair damage is caused by heating, aggressively combing, teasing, too tight a ponytail or bum, etc.

I think we all know what hurts our hair, but sometimes we have to do it, due to the desired hairstyle. If you cross the line you will end up with damaged hair. You have to have a great hairstyle, this is supposed to be the part of every person, but take care of your hair, always.

Tips on how to fix damaged hair

Wash your hair less frequently – Shampooing is also a little bit stressful for your hair. Also, if your house water is chlorinated, it can also have a bad effect on your hair.

If you brush your hair while it’s wet, you can easily damage it. Wet hair is weaker. Keep that in mind. Brushing with a plastic-bristled brush is very damaging to hair, a wide-tooth comb is a better option.

Stop using heaters for a while. If you feel you really must use heat styling tools, use them on a low setting, and save it for special occasions. And don’t forget about thermal protection leave-in treatments.

Hair extensions and weaves are particularly bad for the hair. Avoid those in the period you are fixing damaged hair.

My story

To be honest with you, I burned out my hair, ten years ago. I wanted to be blonde after I colored my hair black. Therefore I needed to bleach my hair twice, and do several toners, after. I had a great color, to be honest, but the price was too high, for sure.

As a result, my hair started breaking the same second I went blonde. After one month, half of my hair was gone. Literally. I went from long massive hair to short bob chopped hair strands.

After I did a haircut, I felt relief. My hair started breathing again. However, that wasn’t enough. My hair needed protein, keratin, and vitamins.

My product

From my experience as a hairdresser and with my clients, I got the information about some of the best professional products that really helped them in process of fixing damaged hair.

I started using Redken extreme mask. My hair felt stronger and in better condition after each application. This mask is a protein injection that fills your hair shaft making the cuticle more strong. My hair transformed from weak, to more resistant. Hair recovery began immediately.

Patience, strong will, consistency, and a great hair care routine, were the crucial factors for my hair recovery. Here is what I’ve been using on my hair:

Redken Extreme bleach recovery – Twice per week, I applied the mask after shampooing.

Damaged hair solutions

These two products were a crucial part of my hair care routine. Also, I was using a serum for my ends and oils.

Redken Extreme Length Leave-In Conditioner | For Hair Growth | Seals Split Ends & Prevents Breakage | Infused With Biotin – This serum intensely conditions and smoothens hair and delivers a silky soft finish, without weighing your hair down. Adds moisture and makes a protective layer around your hair shaft. Redken Extreme Length Leave-In Conditioner is for strengthening damaged hair to grow longer and stronger and promotes hair growth. Extreme Length Leave-In Conditioner helps prevent breakage so your hair can keep growing longer.

The part of my recipe is a regular haircut — every two months in this level of damage.

Coloring damaged hair

Stopping with coloration completely.

Your hair requires rest. Mine was absolutely over-proceed at the moment, so I colored my hair with ammonium-free, high-quality L’oreal Inoa number 5.35. As a result, I had natural chocolate warmish brown, with a beautiful shine. It was a fantastic result. Little advice – If you color blonde hair to darker nuances, always use a warm brown color, to avoid green reflection, which looks terrible. I didn’t put any color dye for the next three months. After, I repeated this one, and it was even more beautiful next time. Then I stopped with hair colors for years. I loved having my natural color for a long time.

Careful with the comb. Patient and gentle combing, on dry hair, is the best way to save your hair from more damage.

Rinse shampoo and conditioner with cold water. Hot water can cause the cuticle to open, allowing the dye to rinse out. Too hot water is harmful to your hair, and reduces the moisture level, making your hair weaker. Avoid excessively hot water, under any circumstances.

Treat your hair as a weak, beautiful flower. This is the best tip in general.

A final word

Once your hair is damaged, the best way to fix it is to give it time to grow back healthy and strong. Use deep conditioning treatments to help bring back its luster, and be healthy from the inside out to stimulate the growth of new healthy hair. So, eat healthy food, lots of fruits and vegetables.

  16. People in my area don’t know that shampoos that grow your hair fast (of course with no sulfates, no parabens, no DEA) are even a thing. Folks can now enjoy longer hair and have more options. Surely worth considering.

If you’re studying hair loss, hair damage, preventing scalp disorders, hair growth, hair and scalp care more often than not, the same ideas apply.

Generally, you should try to steer clear of hair treatments and products that use chemicals such as parabens, DEA and sulfates.

What’s good for your hair is good for your skin also.

However, when it comes to safety, you should go for the more expensive straighteners because they have less possibility of causing damages to your hair. Ionic hair brushes are safe enough to use with any hair type.
